As part of Hurricane Sandy debris removal contract, SCE crews cleaned the FDNY 9/11 Firefighters Memorial in Rockaway Tribute Park, Rockaway, NY.  This 9/11 memorial in the city of New York remembers and pays tribute to 57 Rockaway Park residents who died at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001.

Some residents, 33 men and women, worked in the World Trade Center towers; others, 24 first responders, firefighters, tried to save the workers when the towers came down. The tribute is composed of several integrated design features: a park situated alongside the waters of Jamaica Bay, from which on 9/11 community members watched, helpless and horrified, as the towers disappeared; a glass dome, or cupola – the artist’s title, “The Heavens Over Rockaway”; a hand cut, circular mosaic, of Ground Zero rubble as well as glass, whose navigational star points toward the WTC site; and, a plaque-on-stone remembrance of lost firefighters, topped by, in carved granite, a helmet. The names of the 57 people killed are sandblasted into the cupola’s glass stars.

SCE’s crews are throughout NY and NJ working on Hurricane clean up and debris removal.
